Kashif Rana, popularly known as Chahat Fateh Ali Khan, was born in March 1965 in Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan.
He acquired higher education from a variety of learning institutions, from the Government College University and the Lahore University of the Punjab in Pakistan to the London School of Economics in England. He also joined the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) as a visiting faculty member at the School of Economics.

Cricket
Before making a name for himself in the music industry, Chahat Fateh Ali Khan was a first class cricketer. He played for the Lahore cricket team in two first-class cricket matches and scored a total of 16 runs over three innings during the 1983–84 season of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy.
Khan later moved to the United Kingdom where he played cricket at club level for 12 years. He eventually retired and became a taxi driver.
