Monisha Patil was born in the late 1960s in Mumbai, India. Her mother, Vimla Patil, worked as a journalist in the media industry and as an editor for an Indian women's magazine named Femina. She is also known to have a brother who is a lawyer. 

Monisha Patil acquired basic education at Bombay International School and later at St Columba School in Mumbai. She then went on to attend HR College of Commerce where she obtained a degree in Commerce and the London School of Journalism where she obtained a diploma in Journalism. She also attended the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, where she acquired a diploma in Hotel Management.

Monisha Patil started her career as a journalist, reporting on issues related to lifestyle, business, politics, and entertainment for a variety of newspapers and magazines. 

As a result of her love for cooking, Monisha decided to venture into the culinary world, researching and sampling various ingredients as well as dishes. In 2012, she worked at The Bristol School of Food and Wine in the United Kingdom as a chef. She also tutored as a chef at Bertinet Kitchen, Seasoned Cookery School, and Ashburton Cookery School.

Other than being a journalist and a chef, Monisha Patil is also an author. She has written books on cooking as well as the Indian culture and history. Some of her popular books include “India: Q Journey Through Time,” “India: A Celebration of Life,” “India: A Cultural Odyssey,” “The Indian Kitchen,” “Indian Vegetarian Cooking,” and “The Indian Spice Kitchen.”

Monisha Patil was previously married to Nitish Bharadwaj, an actor and politician with whom she had two children together named Arrush and India. The couple filed for divorce in 1988 and went their separate ways.
