David Nweze Umahi, popularly known as Dave Umahi, was born on July 25, 1963, in Uburu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He is the son of Margaret Umahi and Elder Joseph Umahi Nwaze. He is also a brother to Austin Umahi Nweze (former south east vice chairman of the People's Democratic Party), Roy Umahi Nwaeze (a legal practitioner), and General Obi Abel Umahi (former chairman of the South-East Security Committee, Ebubeagu).
Umahi acquired secondary education from Ishiagu High School and the Government Secondary School of Afikpo before going on to attend the Enugu State University of Science and Technology where he acquired a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

Dave Umahi started his career in 1993 as general manager of Norman Engineering and Construction Nig. Limited, a company he cofounded with Ombo Isokarari. He also served as the chairman and CEO of Osborn La Palm Royal Resort Ltd., Focus Investment Nig. Ltd., and Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd., [7] Focus Investment Nig. Ltd.
Politics
Dave Umahi started his political career in 2007 when he was made the acting chairman of the Ebonyi State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Two years later, he served as PDP's state chairman and also as chairman of the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba.
In 2011, Umahi became the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State on a ticket with the-then Governor Martin Elechi. He was then elected Governor of the state in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
In November 2020, Dave Umahi defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) on grounds of PDP being unfair to the Southeast Geopolitical Zone and the party being “hijacked by one or two individuals.”
In March 2022, Dave Umahi and his deputy Eric Kelechi Igwe were sacked as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State respectively by the Federal High Court in Abuja for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
